What is Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH)?
Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH) is a condition in infants and young children where the hip joint does not form properly. In a healthy hip, the ball at the top of the thigh bone fits snugly into the hip socket. In DDH, the socket is too shallow, and the ball may be loose, partially dislocated, or completely dislocated.
DDH can affect one or both hips and may develop before or after birth. Early detection is crucial for proper hip development and to prevent long-term mobility problems.
Key Facts About DDH
Most common in newborns, particularly girls
Left hip is more frequently affected
Can be present at birth or develop during the first year of life
Screening is vital within the first few weeks of life
Early treatment leads to full recovery in most cases
Causes of DDH
While the exact cause is often unknown, contributing factors include:
Family history of hip dysplasia
Breech birth (baby positioned feet-first in the womb)
Firstborn children
Tight swaddling that restricts leg movement
Hormonal effects during pregnancy
Symptoms and Consequences of DDH

- Clicking or popping sounds when moving the hip
